Day 53
Yesterday (2:30pm) as we were driving back to campus from town there were fires on both sides of the road, right up to the road, with the flames blowing into the traffic lanes about a yard. It was just down the road from campus and I was wondering if they would come any closer.
(9pm)Last night we had some big fires that were on the other side of the road (across from campus) and down the hill from campus. Across the road the fires were roaring, but down the hill they seemed to be mild. Little did we know that the wind would pick up the fires and bring them closer. Called the firefighters to come and protect us, but since they saw the campus wasn't actually on fire, they left.
(10:30-11pm) Heidi and I heard crackling behind our flat and looked out the bathroom window. The whole field behind our flat was on fire. It was about maybe 20 yards from the campus electrical fencing. We went out to watch and see if it would dim down. Turned to look over at what used to be a roaring fire across the street and found that there was hardly any smoke. Now the smoke and fire was behind our flat. Prayed that the fire would not come on campus this side because that is where the garden is. They never came onto campus that side, but they were close and it was nerve-racking. It was like we were surrounded by fire.
(2am) Esther and Dorcas moved the cars into the middle of campus and had the firefighters come again to help dim the flames on campus. Some students woke to help pour water on the grasses around the grass fields to hopefully stop the fires. It almost caught on Joy Hut and burnt it, but it didn't. The roofing is made of grass and could have easily started. Dorcas said the flames were huge because the grass on campus along where there are no buildings, the grass is very long and dry and so it starts on fire very easily.
Did lots of little prayers last night that God would keep us safe from the fires. Concluded that if they did come on campus, it would only burn the long grass where there were no buildings but wouldn't go much further because the grass is cut short and the fire wouldn't spread. The only thing that could bother us is the smoke. We smelt smoke all night long and heard the crackling of fires. It almost sounded like rain, but we knew it was fire.
I woke up in the middle of the night and wondered if we were surrounded by fire still. I said a quick prayer and went back to sleep. It was probably around the time when the fields on campus were burning near Joy Hut.
This morning I woke up and started to investigate. I saw the black fields that burnt far onto campus on the west end. On the end that the flats were on, the fires didn't come further than the fencing. God protected us.

-The wild fires didn't do any more damage than just to burn the campus grass fields. I guess at 2am last night they were getting very close to joy hut, which is made of wood and a grass thatched roof, and they had some students pouring water on the ground and at the fire. Someone said that the flames were huge and looking like they were going to catch onto Joy hut. Thank you for your prayers of safety! God heard!

-It is hot during the recent days, even though it's supposed to be cold during this time of the year. Nights haven't been too cold the past few nights which is a major praise.
